We assist other health care workers and attorneys to determine whether an
individual has the capacity to independently act in a variety of roles,
including
- Competence to make medical decisions
- Establish a DNR order
- Ability to consent to surgery and other intrusive therapies
- Competence to make or alter contracts
- Competence to create or alter wills
- Ability to live independently
- Ability to manage money
- Need for guardianship

Psychological evaluation begins with a review of the person's medical and
psychological records and history, with information being supplied by family
members as well as the individual being evaluated. Following the record review,
the individual is seen for a clinical interview, which includes several measures
of orientation, short term memory and reasoning ability. Following the clinical
interview, psychological testing may be administered, according to the interview
results, to objectively assess memory functions, cognitive reasoning ability and
judgment. Specific assessment tools and techniques, developed specifically for
competency evaluations may be used. An expert opinion is then offered , based
on the evaluation, regarding the extent to which the person is capable of making
decisions.
Dr. Kaplan has completed all relevant training mandated by the State of
Florida for competency evaluators. |
